While we don’t have cable, we do have Netflix, Hulu+, Crunchyroll, and Amazon Prime. We watch different things on each, and they’re all worth the subscription prices. At least to us! We recently upgraded Hulu+ to Hulu+ With Live TV, which has been a fun change. One thing we didn’t miss is the constant onslaught of pharmaceutical commercials, but that’s not what I’m here to talk about today! On with the favorites!
We started some wonderful TV shows this year. We blew threw season one of Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and we’re on season two. The new Queer Eye made me cry, and I just want to give everyone in it a hug. The Lost In Space reboot was actually good! I have mixed feelings about the first season of Star Trek: Discovery, but I’m invested and on board if only for the lovely supporting cast. I can never unsee the Klingon sex scenes, and I can’t forgive CBS for how they handled topics like consent, abuse, and flashbacks. Really just their entire approach to bringing adult content into Star Trek could have been handled far better. This one is technically only new to W since I was a fan as a kid, but we started to watch Jeopardy a few months ago. It makes me happy. In terms of new shows that made us laugh, A.P. Bio and the Korean show Strong Girl Bong Soon were the memorable two. If you haven’t watched A.P. Bio, run, don’t walk.
Shows We Kept Watching
We continued watching a lot of things we were already invested in. Our never ending march towards the end of Supernatural goes on. As usual, we loved Steven Universe, The Good Place, and Doctor Who. We kept up with Series of Unfortunate Events and Jessica Jones. Netflix’s Castlevania is fantastic. We finished Hell On Wheels. Also, if you still haven’t watched The Great British Baking Show, are you okay? Blink twice if you need help.
Anime was almost its own blog post because of how much we love and watch it. We haven’t watched as much of it this year as we usually do, so I scaled it down. We enjoyed Children of the Whales, Kino’s Journey: The Beautiful World, Girls’ Last Tour, Laid-Back Camp, Cells At Work, and the first full season of Ancient Magus Bride. The new seasons of Attack On Titan, Blood Blockade Battlefront, My Hero Academia, and Overlord 2 were all good, too.
Shows I Watched Alone
I watched quite a few shows on my own this year. The Americans was impressive from beginning to end, but I did fast forward some scenes that freaked me out. I think it was a show I wouldn’t watch again, because while brilliantly written and acted, it definitely left me feeling depressed. I got sucked into a few Korean and Japanese romantic dramas, specifically Boys Over Flowers, Good Morning Call, and Hello, My Twenties. They made me laugh and were a mostly light-hearted way to turn my brain off and relax. I also loved Anne With An E, Netflix’s take on Anne Shirley. I cried a lot, so I’d say it’s not a go-to feel-good. It was special to me for not being feel-good, in ways that probably only make sense to me. My favorite show I watched alone this year was Mozart of the Jungle. It’s very unusual, and I’m not even sure what to compare it to. I loved everything about it, from the music to the characters to the story.
